Moringa (Moringa oleifera) is a fast-growing tropical tree often called the Miracle Tree or Drumstick Tree. Native to tropical regions, every part of the tree is edible and nutrient-dense, with leaves and pods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, calcium, potassium, and protein. It is heat tolerant up to about 118F in shade and drought tolerant once established.

At a glance

  • Botanical name: Moringa oleifera
  • Type: Perennial tropical tree, non-GMO
  • Hardiness: Zones 10 to 11
  • Sun: Full sun, very heat and drought tolerant
  • Edible parts: Leaves, pods, roots, and more
  • Use: Teas, smoothies, cooking, landscape specimen

Best for

  • Nutrient-rich leaves for teas and smoothies
  • Edible pods and cooking greens
  • Warm-climate and container growing
  • Heat and drought-tolerant landscapes
  • Specimen plantings and tall hedges

How to grow

Start seeds in warm, well-drained soil in full sun, or propagate from cuttings. Moringa thrives in heat and tolerates drought once established, growing as a perennial in zones 10 to 11 and as a container or annual plant in cooler regions. Harvest young leaves and tender pods regularly.

Flavor profile

Bitter yet subtly sweet with a matcha-like quality and hints of spirulina; the leaves carry a peppery, horseradish-like kick.
